The Impact on the Sponsor
Developing a relationship with my sponsored kids takes them from being a photo on my fridge to being a treasured part of my family, my life, and my heart. As I have learned to consistently write to these children they have become woven into the fabric of my day and of my life. They have my frequent attention, rather than my it all being spent on my “first world” problems, interests and pursuits. My world has expanded to care about each of them, and I think about them everyday, just as they think about me.
This is Changing Me!
Truly connecting with a child in poverty not only changes the child’s life, but it also changes mine. As my friends and I have discovered, once our hearts moved toward these children and we got more involved, we started making lifestyle changes of our own. Just like a parent is willing to make sacrifices in time, energy, and finances for their own children, so a sponsor who is making heart connections with the sponsored child is willing to adjust their lifestyle and start making changes in order to invest in the life of the child.
As I’ve been connecting with the hearts of my sponsored children, many of them have been asking to call me Mom, though depending on the child’s situation, I generally suggest Grammie out of respect for their own mothers. Others have been calling me aunt or sister, but regardless of the title, it indicates that we are connecting with our hearts and becoming family to each other. And I am being changed.
One day while driving home from another long day at school, I was feeling so incredibly blessed… open doors, favor, blessing, strength, creativity, productivity, and more were just pouring out all over me, in me and through me.
“Lord! I’m feeling so blessed!”
“You have all those children praying for you and blessing you every day,” was His reply.
And I just caught my breath in amazement as I realized the significance of this.
“The generous soul will be made rich,
And he who waters will also be watered himself.” Prov. 11:25 NKJV
Being Blessed in Return
God is blessing me back in ways that I never anticipated. I’ve been “watering” each of these sweeties, and in return, God is “watering” me. I’m just beginning to realize the significance of my sponsored children blessing me and praying for me everyday… and not only the children, but their families as well. That’s a ripple effect, so that there are well over 100 people blessing me every day!
I am also blessed as many of these children have been writing to give me words of encouragement, such as this one by Yovani… “I send you Isaiah 62:3… ‘You shall also be a crown of glory in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.’ I knew it was for you when I read it. Meditate about it, and it will help you when you are sad.”
I’m being abundantly watered and wonderfully blessed as I invest my heart in the lives of each of these children.
